braille books

I have a ton of braille books I am wanting to get rid of.
The books in question are books I had when I was a kid, and no longer need.
They are mostly childrens books, from early readers up through Harry Potter and similar.
I've also got a King James bible which takes up two entire shelves on a bookshelf.
It's all gotta go, and I'd love to give it away.
I've tried to give them away in my local area, but nobody wants them.
Even the local blind school won't take them, which seems kind of sad, considering the terrible state of that school's facilities... but that's another story.
If anyone's interested, send me a private message or respond to the board post.
I'll probably get private messages quicker, as they go to my email box.
As for shipping, I'm in the process of finding out whether or not I can ship the books free matter, since they're braille.
If there are any shipping costs above 10 bucks or so, I ask that whoever wants the books pay the shipping cost.
I have boxes and boxes of these things, and if you don't want the whole collection, that's fine.
I just want to get the books off to a good home, and out of my parents basement!
Thanks

I have a friend with the same problem. He's got shelves full of Braille books he can't get rid of.

Hm...I wonder if there are any organizations that would take them as donations? Libraries, even a school...hell the CNIB or some other such place might even take them.

I agree with Meglet. You may be better off to check with organizations. You probably aren't going to find many individual takers. I do love Braille books, but I have no space to keep anything like that, and at this point, my library is my BrailleNote. I imagine that's the case with many blind people.

Hey Roxtar,

I live in Virginia and attend a Christian university. Let me do some checking and see if anyone, such as the library or a local church could use the Bible. I'm sure you would like this to go, as it is incredibly massive.

Nathan.

That'd be great if you could find someone.
I live in Virginia as well, so it shouldn't be much for shipping.
The bible's huge, and it, especially, has got to go.

Out of curiosity: where did you get that Bible from? I know that some organizations who produce them, such as Braille Bibles International, take them back and re-donate them to others who want them.

True, they do.

Let me do some checking.

I don't remember where it came from. It was some place like that I'm sure.

Ah yes there are institutes to give you religious and spiritual books, everything from bibles to tarots or whatever brand of woo you wish to pursue, but nary a manual on a mechanical device, no literature on some more practical uses. A bit of a sore spot from a time a few decades ago. Many people seem to hate rationalism and love woo instead. Whichever brand is of no consequence to me.
And because your mind is what it is, if that is all you have to read you will read it. Shows how flimsy woo really is.
I did love me some national geographics as a kid though, at least they had that in Braille.

If you look at the title page, it might say. Mine did.

I'm a little curious as to the condition and type of these books. Are they contracted or uncontracted? Thermoform, single-sided or double-sided? And you say they're kids books, mostly...I'm definitely not interested in books for small children, but I confess that I'm curious about what you've got, from something like Harry Potter on up. I love braille books, though I don't exactly have tons of space right now. I'm not committing to anything, you understand, I'm more curious than anything.

I would love to know more like the poster above. I would love to have more books.

How is your bible designed? What kind of a cover does it have?
I have one but it is in storage and I am not a huge fane of the way it is mae. I should look in to sending it back to the makers once I get it out.

Hi, we might be able to take some of those books off your hands. How can we get in contact?

Thanks!

For anyone who may be interested,

A large number of Bibles, distributed by BBI, contain hard covers. Yes, they are contracted, consist of double-sided Braille, and also include a cloth bookmark, which is a nice addition. Other Bibles, which originate from varying organizations have soft covers and flimsy bindings, thus falling apart easily. Roxtar, besides sending the books back to the organization, the university is not interested at this time. My recommendation would be to donate them to a public library. You can usually drop it off for free and a librarian will take them. This is what I did with mine.

Hey guys,
I've got the hard backed bible, the one Hardy Boy was talking aboutiwith the little cloth bookmark. I've honestly never even read the thing.
Nicky's got first dibs on the stuff, so after she gets back to me, I'll post a list of what I've got left.
Anybody else, feel free to private message or email me if you have any questions.
The Harry Potter books I have are 1 through 4, by the way.
Thanks for the interest

I'll take the Harry Potter books... they can be sent from North America to the UK for free as printed matter for the blind... I sent myself Grade 2 copies of The Screwtape Letters, The Little Prince, and a Grade 2 braille dictionary last year before I left Vancouver for London and it went for free.

I'm really curious as to the titles of the books you have, but I know typing out that information would take an eternity.

Post 22 by roxtar (move over school!) on Saturday, 21-Sep-2013 23:15:05

Hey guys,
The King James bible and Harry Potter have been spoken for.
There's still more to come, so keep an eye on the thread.
I'm still planning to put up a list of books when I go to my parents house, so be ready to speak for what ever you want.

Post 23 by roxtar (move over school!) on Sunday, 22-Sep-2013 20:13:10

All the books are spoken for.
Thanks for your interest.

So much for the list...but I'm glad you've got people who are interested, anyway.

Post 25 by roxtar (move over school!) on Monday, 23-Sep-2013 3:37:45

Yup, sorry for all you people who were waiting for a list of books.
One person said they wanted the lot of it, and being glad to see it go, I gave it all away.

Roxtar, I have the same braille-book issue, and I know all of these have been accounted for, but I've heard that the NFB has a braille book fair, which they hold at their convension. My local school for the blind takes them with much cajolling as well. There may be a way to donate any unneeded braille books to the NFB, but I'l have to look into that. Just some info.
